Wrights Road and Lake Road included in long-awaited Oxley Highway upgrade plan
The NSW Government has confirmed Port Macquarie’s Wrights Road and Lake Road intersections will be included in staged upgrades to the Oxley Highway, marking a major step towards improving one of the region’s busiest transport corridors.
The project which will commence next year will include an upgrade to the Pacific Highway-Oxley Highway interchange delivering more lanes between the interchange and Billabong Drive, extend the northbound off-ramp, install traffic signals and improve street lighting.
Member for Port Macquarie, Robert Dwyer welcomed the announcement describing it as an important milestone after sustained advocacy from the community and all levels of government.
"This is news our community has been waiting for," Mr Dwyer said.
"For years the community has called for action to fix congestion and improve safety on the Oxley Highway. Seeing Wrights Road and Lake Road included in the Government's staged plan is a significant step forward.
"I've raised this issue in Parliament with Ministers and at every opportunity because our region needs infrastructure that keeps pace with our growth. This announcement shows what can be achieved when a community speaks with one voice."
Mr Dwyer thanked the thousands of people who backed Business Port Macquarie's petition calling for the upgrades, along with everyone who contributed to the Government's Have Your Say consultation.
"More than 10,000 people signed the petition because they experience this congestion every day," he said.
"I also want to thank everyone who dropped a pin on the Have Your Say map. Local knowledge played an important role in demonstrating where investment was needed most.
"This is a win for every person who took the time to speak up."
"I’m pleased we can now roll out this staged approach, so locals reap the benefits sooner and know what’s ahead," Ms Aitchison said.
Mr Dwyer said today's announcement was an important milestone, but more work remained.
"We've secured a pathway forward, but we're not finished," he said.
"I'll keep working to ensure every stage of the Oxley Highway upgrade is funded and delivered so our community has the infrastructure it needs for the future."
