Community urged to back push for Houston Mitchell Drive overpass

Following a successful grassroots campaign that drew attention to the urgent need for upgrades to the Oxley Highway, the Port Macquarie electorate is now being urged to rally behind calls to improve the Houston Mitchell Drive and Pacific Highway intersection.
Member for Port Macquarie Robert Dwyer said the strong public response to the Transport for NSW “Have Your Say” campaign proved just how effective community advocacy can be.
“Thousands of people placed pins on the Oxley Highway, sending a clear message that our community expects action,” Mr Dwyer said.
“We now have an opportunity to build that same momentum for Houston Mitchell Drive, where there is widespread local support for an overpass at the Pacific Highway intersection.”
Mr Dwyer said he met this week with Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison to raise both projects.
“The Minister is well aware of the concerns surrounding these roads and I appreciate her time and ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure in our region,” he said.
Bonny Hills Progress Association Vice President Kathy Regan said it was vital the community continues to make its voice heard.
“Projects like this risk being delayed indefinitely unless governments see consistent, visible evidence of community demand,” Ms Regan said.
“Our 2023 petition, signed by more than 16,000 people, showed just how strongly the community feels, but we need to keep that pressure on.”
Ms Regan encouraged residents to once again engage with the Transport for NSW consultation platform.
“Adding a pin, sharing your experiences, and voicing concerns may seem simple, but collectively it sends a powerful message.
“We must maintain the momentum until decision makers commit to planning an overpass at this dangerous intersection,” she said.
