Mid North Coast Flood Anniversary a Time for Reflection and Ongoing Support

The anniversary of the devastating 1-in-500-year Mid North Coast floods serves as a solemn reminder of the lives lost, the destruction endured, and the resilience shown by communities across the Port Macquarie electorate.
Speaking in Parliament last night, Member for Port Macquarie, Robert Dwyer said, “Almost twelve months on from the disaster, communities including Port Macquarie, the North Shore, Moorland, Coopernook and Harrington continue to reflect on the impact of the floods, which caused widespread damage to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.
“Today, we remember the five lives tragically lost during the disaster and extend our heartfelt thoughts to their families and loved ones.
“Anniversaries such as this are not simply dates on a calendar, they are moments to reflect, remember and acknowledge the grief and hardship many people continue to carry,” Mr Dwyer said.
“While significant progress has been made in the recovery effort, many residents, families and business owners are still rebuilding their lives and dealing with the emotional and financial impacts left behind.
“Recovery is not a straight line. For many people, the challenges did not end when the floodwaters receded,” Mr Dwyer said.
“The anniversary also highlights the extraordinary strength and compassion displayed throughout the region during the crisis. Emergency services personnel, volunteers, local organisations and everyday residents came together to support one another in remarkable ways.
“Special recognition was given to the State Emergency Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, Marine Rescue, NSW Police, Rural Fire Service, Ambulance crews and local council staff for their tireless efforts in protecting lives and assisting communities during the emergency response.
“Countless volunteers were also acknowledged for helping fill sandbags, prepare meals, clear debris and provide support to those in need.
“These acts of kindness may never appear in official reports, but they represent the very heart of our community,” Mr Dwyer said.
“While acknowledging the funding support provided by the NSW Government following the disaster, continued support for affected residents and businesses remains essential.
“The Mid North Coast is a resilient and compassionate region, but recovery takes time, patience and ongoing commitment. No one should have to walk the recovery journey alone,” Mr Dwyer said.
