DWYER BACKS FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT PLAN FOR EASTER

Member for Port Macquarie, Robert Dwyer has thrown his support behind calls for free public transport across NSW this Easter long weekend, saying the proposal would deliver much needed relief to local families facing rising living costs.
With fuel prices continuing to surge and household budgets under increasing strain, Mr Dwyer said families in the Port Macquarie electorate are feeling the pressure more than ever.
“Families across our region are doing it tough. The cost of simply getting around, whether it’s commuting to work, taking kids to school, or visiting loved ones has gone up significantly,” Mr Dwyer said.
“This Easter should be a time for families to relax and reconnect, not worry about how much it costs to fill up the car. Free public transport over the long weekend is a practical way to put money back into people’s pockets when they need it most.”
Mr Dwyer welcomed the proposal put forward by the NSW Liberals and Nationals, which includes extending free travel to regional services such as XPT trains and TrainLink coaches.
“For regional communities like those in the Port Macquarie electorate, travel often means long distances and high fuel costs. Including XPT and TrainLink services ensures families in our area are not left behind and have a real, affordable alternative,” he said.
Mr Dwyer also highlighted the potential economic benefits for local businesses, noting that increased public transport usage could encourage more people to get out and support local shops, cafes, and tourism operators over the holiday period.
“This is a win for families and a win for local businesses. More people out and about means more support for our small businesses, which are the backbone of our regional economy.”
Mr Dwyer is calling on the NSW Government to act swiftly and implement the proposal ahead of the Easter long weekend.
“This is a sensible, targeted measure that would make a real difference right now. I urge the Government to put families first and deliver this relief in time for Easter.”
