AVERAGE SPEED CAMERA TRIAL
AVERAGE SPEED CAMERA TRIAL STARTS TOMORROW
Member for Port Macquarie, Robert Dwyer is warning local motorists that the NSW Average Speed Camera Trial for light vehicles starts tomorrow Thursday 1st May.
The local camera is located on the Pacific Highway and tracks average speed for 15 kilometres between Kew and Lake Innes. The other camera location in NSW is on the Hume Highway between Coolac and Gundagai.
“The NSW Government is conducting the trial to expand average speed cameras from heavy vehicle to all vehicles with a view to assess whether average speed cameras for light vehicles will help to reduce speeding,” Mr Dwyer said.
“Speeding is the biggest killer on NSW roads. In 2023 it contributed to 44 per cent of road deaths in NSW with regional areas representing three quarters of these speeding related fatalities.
“The two locations have been chosen based on several factors including crash history and the ability to make the technical changes required to enforce light vehicles for the trial,” Mr Dwyer said.
“As is the case with existing policy, during the warning period if a driver exceeds the speed limit by more than 30 km/h, they will receive a fine and may have to attend court, incur demerit points and or lose their licence.”
Normal enforcement including fines and demerit points begin on 1st July 2025 and will run to 30th June 2026.
