URGENT APPEAL FOR NSW GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR OUR

OYSTER INDUSTRY

The oyster farming communities of Harrington, Coopernook, and Port Macquarie are calling on the NSW Government to provide immediate relief by waiving NSW Fisheries fees and Crown Land lease fees for up to two years.

Member for Port Macquarie, Robert Dwyer said, “This measure is critical as farmers rebuild their businesses following the catastrophic floods of May 2025, which have been described as a 1-in-500-year event.

“The floods caused unprecedented damage to oyster infrastructure and stock, washing away thousands of baskets and destroying machinery worth tens of thousands of dollars.

“I know from speaking to oyster farmers that many have lost entire harvests, including oysters that had taken three years to grow, resulting in losses exceeding $250,000 for some operators.

“Clean-up efforts have been extensive, with growers working tirelessly to retrieve debris and restore estuaries,” Mr Dwyer said.

Recovery for the oyster industry is not immediate. Sydney Rock Oysters take three to four years to reach market size, meaning the economic impact of this disaster will be felt for years.

“Without urgent financial relief, many farmers risk insolvency, jeopardizing a sector that supports local jobs and contributes millions to the regional economy.

“I am urging the NSW Government to act swiftly by implementing fee waivers and expanding disaster recovery assistance. This support will allow oyster farmers to focus on rebuilding and ensure the long-term sustainability of one of the Mid North Coast’s most iconic industries,” Mr Dwyer said.
